The more preventative steps taken below, the better the workstations, whether at home or work, will be able to handle the demands expected of them.

1. Update Norton Antivirus and run full scan. Quarantine all detected items.

2. Glary utilities: Check all boxes. Run “one-click maintenance”. Remove anything found.

5. Hard Drive Powerwash: Run full scan. Remove anything found.

ESL (English as a Second Language)

We just enrolled two ELLs (English Language Learners) whose native language is Gujarati. That's a new one to me! What to do about translating notes to home? The Internet is simply amazing! You can find anything if you dig deep enough. I found an English-to-Gujarati program that allows for translating up to 100 characters at a time in trial mode. Good enough for me!

If you are a school with students who speak Gujarati, administrators, counselors, and all classroom teachers working with these children are required by Title III of NCLB to send home notices in BOTH English and the native language spoken at home.

The program (downloadable from the link below) allows for copying and pasting to and from word processing programs (i.e. Microsoft Word).

Flu Season and Viruses

I hope you've gotten your flu vaccinations, but if not, remember that hand washing in any event is a great way to reduce the likelihood of passing along (and receiving) viruses.

I say that to say this: Computers, as we all too-well know, are prone to virus infestations without a degree of maintenance and updating.

This week I went into a mobile lab. Just two of the 25 laptops I examined were HEAVILY infected. Preventative, periodic maintenance takes only minutes, versus hours spent trying to sanitize infected systems!

My multi-pronged approach to system integrity and the prevention of the nasties includes:

1. Norton AntiVirus (NOT Norton Securities)
2. Hard Drive Powerwash
3. SUPERAntispyware
4. Malwarebyte's "Antimalware"

The last two require periodic (weekly for me) updating. Items 2 - 4 are free. Norton Antivirus isn't free. Download these free programs. Install, and update items #3 and #4.

Learn how to disable "System Restore" before conducting full-system scans and deleting suspicious files. Once scanned and deleted, "System Restore" can be re-enabled.Don't forget to defragment the hard drive after all has been cleaned.

To defragment the hard drive, I use one or both of the following free programs, because they are faster and more efficient than that which is included with windows:
1. UltraDefrag
2. Smart Defrag

I run checkdisk (Windows XP) to find and correct hard drive errors. Click here to learn how. Basically you click "Run", type chkdsk /f, then press enter. Enter Y at the prompt, then restart the computer.

Because of regular maintenance, my home computer (now 10 years old) runs faster than many I see that are 3 or 4 years old.

Progress......transitioning from Palm-based PIMs to the Android smart phone (Sprint "Moment") is really going to simplify things for school administrators!

Textbooks can be ordered from the smartphone using Google Forms.

Classroom walkthroughs can be conducted on the smartphone using Google Forms.

With the purchase of a product called "Sync2", get this:

A contact or an event is entered into Microsoft Outlook.
Sync2 then uploads that information to one's Gmail account (calendar and contacts, respectively).
The smartphone will then wirelessly synchronize data from the Google account (and vice-versa)

Got that? Sync2 = Information into Outlook>>>Google Calendar/Contacts>>>Smartphone.

Two more freebies to experiment with that will help keep your busy schedule in order:

Synchronizing Outlook and Google Calendars & Contacts

How Can I Sync/Copy Data From Outlook to Google Apps (Calendar and Contacts)?

As we transition from a Palm-based “Centro” to the Android-based “Moment”, the question above has been asked of me many times.

I’ve experimented with 3 different programs (there are more) and feel that my recommendation to help you accomplish the above task is best served by a program called “Sync2”. It can be downloaded from http://www.sync2.com/default.asp

Sync2 is a trialware program, good for 14 days following installation. However, its value is found in the following attributes:

1. It does what it says it will do, and does it well.
2. It can be configured to simultaneously auto-synchronize between multiple devices
(i.e. a desktop PC at work, a laptop, and your new Android-based smartphone).
3. It is fairly easy to operate.

This assumes that you have a Google/Gmail account. I suggest that the WebTop version of Google Calendar be left out of the equation; that you create your own, personal Gmail/Google account. Outlook and the WebTop Google Calendar don’t seem to communicate well with each other, thus my reason for suggesting that you create your own Google account.

Initially, it may take awhile using “Sync2” to sync Outlook’s calendar and contacts with Google’s calendar and contacts. Subsequent synchronizations (should you decide to purchase the program) will not take as long as the initial synchronizations.

Using the trial version of Sync2, even though it will expire in 14 days from installation, will take care of the lion’s share of synchronizing, saving you a considerable amount of time.

Your new phone can be set to automatically synchronize with Google’s calendar and contacts, so if you decide to stop using Outlook, then there’s no need to purchase Sync2 after the initial synchronizations have been performed.

As of this writing I haven’t yet found a free, reliable, and accurate program that synchronizes both contacts and calendars other than “Sync2” with its 14 day trial.

There exists a free program that’s supposed to synchronize Google’s Calendar with Outlook’s Calendar. It’s produced by Google. I’ve had limited success using it. On one individual’s PC, it synchronized the calendars flawlessly. When tried on my computer, it rendered the operating system unusable. I had to reformat the hard drive. I can’t, with any degree of confidence, recommend the application.

Pet Peeves

We all have pet peeves. Some of us aren't as good as others at repressing "triggers" that elicit an emotional response.Here are a few of mine. Feel free to comment with your own,

receiving emails with no subject - Why are concise, descriptive email subject lines so crucial? I don't know about you, but an email subject header informs me of the focal point before I open the message.
Cross-communication: It's probably happened to you before. You place a phone call and leave a message. The recipient responds immediately, but their response is made using email. It's days before you discover the individual's reply because you didn't check your email. By then potential opportunity has expired. If a conveyance takes the form of an email, respond using email. If initiated by phone, follow up by phone unless the sender asks for a response in another fashion,
You call someone and leave them a voicemail. They call back and say something like this: "I saw where you called. What was it you wanted to tell me?" Considering the elapsed time between calls they may or may not have received your message. Some services are faster than others at sending messages to your voicemail. If sufficient time for the message to transmit has elapsed and the recipient asks what was in the voicemail, It makes me want to shout (throw your hands up and...) Just check your voicemail! Nothing is more satisfying than to leave a voicemail, only to be asked to repeat it. Like I have all the time in the world for that kind of duplicity!
How about the email from one who is experiencing difficulties and needs some HELP!!!? If it's that urgent and they're extremely upset because I didn't immediately reply to their message, they should try using a more suitable mode of communication, like a phone call or personal visit.
Multiple Phone Tag - It's played like this: You call a person from a cell phone that goes to the recipient's voicemail. They return the call to a different cellular number than you indicated. Why does this happen? Is it because they don't know how to write down a number, or is it because they'd rather use speed dial and it's linked to a different number?
how about folks who fail to employ any use of capitalization punctuation or other writing mechanics such as greeting body closing (New sentence follows) I've heard it said that those who write in that manner just might be highly intellectual. That may be so, but could it also be that such a person is lazy and is capitalizing on that premise of intellectualism?Learn how to write! Using email doesn't extend the privilege to abandon good writing skills. In fact, the very "faceless" nature of email should make one write more clearly; to format words (bold, italic, underline, text size, font, and color) to add substance to what the written word in all of its nakedness fails to convey.
One last gripe (although there are more) has to do with folks leaving messages on voicemails. Did you know that there exist multiple voices, each to be used according to circumstances? The same exists for the written word. The "voicemail voice" speaks at about 175 words per minute. The voicemail voice runs sentences together so rapidly that the message has to be played three or four times before one can write all of the pertinent information. The really poor voicemail mentions the contact's phone number at the outset so that by the time you've reached the end of the recording, it needs to be replayed in order to jot down the number (A hint follows.)
Why not speak in a conversational tone, at a normal speed? Oh, and make the phone number be the last detail you mention.

Children (and many adults!) must be taught which mode of communication to employ in a given situation. Communications should be delivered based upon immediacy. Teach individuals the various forms of communication and response. As the song says, "Teach your children well..."

Summertime Cleaning

My wife (a teacher) made the comment, as have other fellow educators, that summer is when we get things done around the house that are usually done in the spring. I'd have to agree with that sentiment! Summer is also a time when many educators "fill their cups" with inservice trainings, conventions, and by taking classes.

Summer is also a good time to give your computer a little TLC. A few suggestions below are offered, as well as a link to a handout that I received this week at a virtual ISTE conference in Fredericksburg, Virginia. It addresses the many features of Google Apps and how they can be employed to increase productivity and lead to more efficient learning.

First, let's give our computers a little "spring cleaning":

Dispose of non-essential files residing on your computer's hard drive. Two free programs do this chore very easily and quickly. One is called Hard Drive Powerwash. The other is named Disk Cleaner. Download and run both programs. You'll be amazed at the amount of space reclaimed on your computer!
When you've sent all of the non-essential files to the Recycle Bin, empty it and run Smart Defrag. First run "defrag only", then run it in "Deep Optimize" mode.
After you've defragmented the hard drive, defragment your computer's registry using Free Registry Defrag.
I'd be remiss if I didn't put in a plug for checking the computer for malware, trojans, and viruses. Two excellent products to use: AntiMalware and SUPERAntispyware. Download and install both. Update both. Run a "full system scan" using both. Delete anything they detect.
It used to be that the most common way viruses were spread was via floppy disks. Times have changed and flash drives can now become carriers of viruses. To reduce the likelihood of contracting a virus using a flash drive, download and use USB Guardian.
Lastly, back up your files! If you suffer the misfortune of contracting a virus or other form of malware, a degree of "peace of mind" will be had by doing so. Would you like a free, quick program that makes a backup of your computer's drivers? Try Double Driver.I've recently used it to reinstall drivers after reformatting a PC. It works very well! DriverMax is another free, easy-to-use application that backs up drivers. It's easy to learn, fast, and reliable.

When these chores have been completed, download the handout I received this week at a virtual conference. You'll be amazed at what all can be done with Google Apps! Dr. Howie DiBlasi did a superb job drafting this handout. We spent three uninterrupted hours reviewing this document and trying the various features Dr. H. prepared for us. The time flew! Not long ago I had the privilege to collaborate with a staff member from West Virginia University. She was responsible for observing students in the Teacher Education program. To travel to each school location for purposes of observation would have been unproductive and inefficient. Surely there must be a solution to this dilemma.

There was. Using a web cam, laptop, and Internet connection, Oovoo was employed, This web service is similar to Skype and Go ToMeeting. Parties can use these programs to see and hear each other in real time. Additionally, the ability to chat is built in to these programs. Oovoo will record the interactive sessions for later recall, but a fee mist be paid to enable that feature.

Enter justin.tv. This program does the same as Oovoo and Skype. The big difference is that justin.tv records interactive sessions for later retrieval at no charge. I've seen justin.tv in action. It's every bit as good as the competition. The fact that it records and saves sessions for later retrieval adds value for pre-service teachers in that the videos can be saved and incorporated into a digital portfolio of their experiences.

Are there uses for the classroom by teachers in the field? Absolutely! A few are bulleted below.

Record lessons for later playback:

Homebound students
Students at home with illnesses
Students on vacation
PLCs and PLNs
Administrators to evaluate personnel
Simulated "public speaking" experiences for students
Schoolwide announcements, news, etc.

Build Fences

"Don't build fences" is sage advice. When it comes to computer desktops, icons can quickly take over "screen real estate". Sometimes a point of diminishing returns occurs when there are so many icons on a desktop that considerable time is spent locating what you're seeking.

When the desktop becomes over-populated with icons and shortcuts, the very idea of placing items on the desktop for rapid retrieval becomes contradictory. Ever tried to herd cats? That's what I've experienced...at least until I discovered a nifty little application called Fences.

There are several ways to organize or "corral" all of those meandering icons. Fences is easily configured to produce a variety of layouts. Six fences reside along the bottom of my screen. They can be renamed, resized, and rearranged according to your preferences. Just "drag-n-drop! Aside from organizing and "de-cluttering" the desktop, Fences adds a degree of "Windows 7" likeness to your computer.

Fences is free, small, and easy to learn. Give it a try. You won't be disappointed!

Viruses, Facebook, yadayadayada

Mother: "Well, doctor, I took my child to you for immunizations when he was 6 months old. So why has he caught a virus now, at age 12?"

Doctor: "Mrs. Jones, your child has to have regular immunizations to remain immunized against certain viruses. Think of it as preventative maintenance, just as you would with maintenance required of your car."

The parallel? Let's say that you've installed malware, spyware, and antivirus programs on your computer. Think you're safe now? Think again. All of these need updated regularly...as often as possible. I update Anti-Malware, SUPERAntispyware, ThreatFire, and Norton Antivirus weekly. That's not all. I have these programs perform full system scans as well, and just as often.

This week I examined more than ten (10) computers. EVERY SINGLE ONE was infected. One of them had over 1,200 infections. It was so damaged by all of the intrusions that the operating system had to be reinstalled.

On another (related) note, some of my Facebook friends have (unknowingly) sent messages to me; the product of a virus. Little did I know (said tongue-in-cheek) that they were spying on me with a web camera! NOT!

Aside from technology, music is something that I'm very passionate about. Just ask anyone who knows me. They'll affirm that! In the past month or so I've been working on composing a song. The lyrics and poetic/musical structure came easily. Setting it all to music is taking a little longer.

This phase of the composition process is being made easier with the aid of two free music/notation/composition programs.

The first is called Crescendo Music Notation Editor. It's actually suite of applications that happens to include the ability to digitally compose musical scores.

The second application is called MuseScore. It's equally as impressive, considering the price!

If you (or your students) want to experience some real-world, higher-level activities, then try composing your own song, or taking musical dictation using these two FREE powerful tools. I believe you'll be impressed.

Stardock's "Fences" - Organize Desktop Clutter

I guess that as the years go on, I become more and more fascinated with application development, particularly with regard to Web 2.0. Web applications surface, evolve, and are in abundance, leaving many hard drives lean, clean, and mean.

Occasionally I come across a user with a computer desktop that is so crowded with shortcuts and files that it's difficult to locate anything! In my efforts to simplify and become more "minimalist", I've found a wonderful application that organizes such crowded desktops (Yes - I had one, too) so that they are neat, tidy, and organized.

Now if only such a thing existed for my physical desktop, then life would really be orderly! The application I'm speaking about works with Windows XP and up. Too bad. I also still have a box running one of Microsoft's older but still stable systems - Windows 2000 Professional.

The application is called "Fences", is free, and can be downloaded from Stardock. Check it out. If you're one whose desktop is nearly overrun with icons to the point of distraction, this might be just what the doctor ordered!

Create Your Own Online Petition

I came across a website that offers much in the way of learning about current events. It's at http://www.change.org

At this site, one can create,view, and sign current petitions that will be sent to representatives at all levels of government.

This site has a lot of potential for the instructional integration of higher-order thinking skills (interpretation, cause & effect, rationalization, and debate to name a few).

Those studying history, sociology, psychology, and politics could glean much from Change.org. We've heard occasional stories of students who've created petitions for causes about which they are passionate. This site adds leverage to those who are thinking of drafting a petition.

Who knows? Maybe the representatives will read and listen; perhaps even invite students to speak at a house meeting when legislators are in session.

What better way to seamlessly integrate collaboration, technology and writing across the curriculum; for a practical, real-world reason, using 21st Century technology?

Kindle Reader for PCs

Pretty cool stuff! By installing the Kindle Reader for PCs, your books can be downloaded and read from your laptop, desktop, or netbook as well as on the Kindle. If you bookmark a page on the PC, Whispersync will save that same location on your Kindle and any other PCs on which Kindle Reader is installed.

Yes - it allows for multiple installations!

Aside from convenience and greater accessibility to your books, I can envision the books being projected for classroom instructional use.

Stick It To The (Virtual) Wall!

Ever been to an inservice, seminar, professional development session, yada-yada-yada where you sit with folks at a table, make a bullet list of summaries on a GIANT piece of paper, then stick it on a wall for all to see?

How about this variation: The wall is bare and your table has a deck of Post-It notes. Each of you write something on a Post-It note, then stick it on a "Parking Lot" (typically on a wall for all to see)?

I just downloaded and tried the most recent release of OpenOffice (Version 3.2.0). Great balls of fire! This version is FAST! It loads so much faster than its predecessor.

I sometimes wonder: With productivity suites such as OpenOffice, Google Apps, and ZOHO, why is it even necessary for cash-strapped customers to buy software of this genre?

As a side-note: I read recently that in 2009 alone, 25 million malware strains were released. I can't say this often enough: Back up your data (documents, presentations,pictures, etc.)!

An antivirus program alone isn't enough to protect you. Neither is the same used in conjunction with a firewall. Seriously consider adding two more layers of protection

Synch Your Calendars...and More!

Google and Outlook calendars can be synched with relative ease using many applications, some free and others for a nominal cost.

The GoogleCalendarSynch application (free) does so very simply and eloquently. The application can be downloaded from here.

Another application (14 day trial) is called iCal4OL. It does the same as the above, but also synchronizes your contacts. Read about iCal4OL here.

I've used both, and while the former is free, the latter is much more powerful. Give them a try and decide for yourself which best fits your needs.

FireShot - Screen Capture Simplified

A recently released Add-On for the Firefox web browser makes capturing, editing, and annotating web pages a snap!

FireShot is the name of the Add-On. Once downloaded and installed, it places an unobtrusive icon in the upper right corner of the browser. When you happen upon a website/page that you'd like to capture and save, simply click on the icon. The image can be saved in either .jpeg or .bmp (bit map) format.

FireShot then allows you to manipulate the image in a numbers of ways, the most useful of which I've found to be cropping and adding annotations. It gets even better...

The image can then be uploaded and stored along with other screen captures and placed in an album. The album can then be viewed as a slide show. How cool is that?

Images and albums are stored online and may be shared. Not only that, but they can be made public or kept private.

Take a look at the end-result of a sample I've created (in under 30 seconds). It's located at http://easycaptures.com/9562647720. This is the perfect answer to creating tutorials. I'm, sure you'll think of other ways this Add-On can be used. It's simple, easy, and elegant in what it does.

Google Apps (Forms/Spreadsheets)

I've had purpose recently to create a spreadsheet and chose to forego software in lieu of a Google spreadsheet. The task itself was mundane, but what I discovered as I wrapped up the project and decided to "explore" was like a breath of fresh air!

What I discovered was that forms could be generated from Google spreadsheets. The respondents can choose from check boxes, multiple choice, drop-down menus, brief text-entry, or longer text-entry. The respondents' data is then imported into the spreadsheet.

The data can then be analyzed and represented graphically in the form of bar or pie graphs. Can you see where I'm going with this? Surveys, polls, assessments...the applications are endless.

I then thought of a way to create a form for administrator classroom walkthroughs using these capabilities. In this day and age of shrinking budgets, my end-product has the potential to save a significant amount of taxpayer's money! Amazing! Free! I'll be sure to pass along a portion of my bonus (he said tongue-in-cheek) to the fine folks at Google for the savings realized by this discovery and application.

Triple Whammy!!!

I'm receiving calls again from folks whose PCs have been infected with malware so intrusive that it prevents them from accomplishing anything at all. Symptoms include slow computer operation, a proliferation of pop-up windows, and a program that launches itself and scans for infections.

It may well be that the "self-installed antimalware scanner" program is the source of the problem! How did it get there? Let me count the ways...

I suggest you read this PDF document to learn what malware is and the many ways it can be installed on your computer. Additionally, read Protect Yourself from Fake Anti-Virus Software.

I've said it before: It's gotten to the point where folks have to be proactive to head off these threats. Below is my "regimen" for being proactive. I perform these steps at least once a week.

As for the details of how to perform individual steps, that's another story for another day, OR you can take the initiative and learn how to perform them.

Backup your documents, songs, PowerPoint, and other files BEFORE the day of reckoning arrives.
Disable System Restore
Download, install, and update Malwarebytes Antimalware (free edition) from http://www.malwarebytes.org (NOT .com).
Download, install, and update SUPERAntiSpyware (free edition) from http://downloads.superantispyware.com/downloads/SUPERAntiSpyware.exe
UPDATE your antivirus program.
If you don't have an antivirus program, say 100 "Hail Marys" for penance, then download, install, update, and run AVG Antivirus.
Delete all files that you are able to from the C:\Windows\Temp folder.
Empty your web browser's cache, offline files, and cookies.
Download and run SmartDefrag from http://www.iobit.com/iobitsmartdefrag.html?Str=download
Disconnect from the Internet (make sure that wireless is off and that no Ethernet cable is attached).
Reboot your computer to "Safe Mode".
Conduct full scans using AntiMalware, SUPERAntiSpyware, and your antivirus program.
Allow those programs to remove the threats.
Run SmartDefrag ("Deep Optimize")
Restart your computer.

It sounds like a lot to do, but considering the alternative.... Tips:

Remove any discovered infections 2 or 3 at a time. Don't allow the applications above discover and allow to accumulate more than a few at a time. Don't try to eliminate them all in one fell swoop.
Once finished with all of the above, run "Windows Update" as often as needed to install ALL of the critical updates.
Update Antimalware, SUPERSpyware, and your antivirus program regularly. I do this at least once a week.
Scan for infections any external drives (flash drives, external hard drives, SD cards, etc.)
Eat plenty of vegetables to reduce your risk of becoming infected. Momma was right after all, and she knows best! ;-)

Broadcasting 101

This Christmas season I had the good fortune to see in action a free web-based broadcasting application that worked very well.

At the church I attend, two services were broadcast over the Internet using http://www.justin.tv ("just-in" tv). The equipment used included:

a netbook
an Internet connection (wireless broadband card/dongle from Sprint, although one from any provider should work)
an account at http://www.justin.tv

The stronger the signal, the better will be the results (less buffering). I can only imagine how clear the viewing would be if the computer were attached to an ethernet cable!

In any case, this is one easy service to use. It's free. It doesn't require sophisticated equipment. It's easy to set up and be broadcasting live streaming video and audio within mere minutes. There's also the capability to chat with the justin.tv broadcaster while the streaming is in progress.

Of course the possibilities are endless:

broadcasting church functions to shut-ins is one such application
the broadcast of school-based activities and performances for folks who otherwise couldn't attend
Students could set up a quick and easy channel for broadcasting school routines, menus, and morning announcements, giving them practice with public speaking

Randall's ESL Cyber Listening Lab

Of all the ESL resources on the Web, Randall's ESL Cyber Listening Lab is one of the most informative, practical, and interactive that I've seen.

The listening lab is continually being updated. Among other benefits, the listening activities feature key vocabulary words and follow-up assessments.

Be sure to explore this site whether or not you are an ESL specialist. I firmly hold to the belief that ALL practitioners are ESL instructors.

Randall's ESL Cyber Listening Lab also has a presence on Facebook. Music and Art - Universal Languages!

With Christmas (not "The Holidays" - it's the Advent season) now upon us, I thought I'd share a few discoveries that you might want to explore during your down time.

The arts, particularly music, are dear to me. They are universally understood. When language fails us across geographic borders, the arts can communicate in a manner that the spoken word can't approximate.

That being said, the following are a few that you'll want to explore and integrate into your classroom instruction:

Paint.net is for digital image editing. Likewise for PhotoFiltre. JamStudio allows one to create music with all manner of complexity (instrumentation, voices, etc.). Playlist.com is a music social networking site. There are numerous genres from which to choose, listen, and share with others.

Observations and food for thought: The first decade of the 21st century is about to conclude. Web 2.0 has matured. Web 3.0 is developing.

What have you learned about 21st century skills since the turn of the century?

Most importantly: How have you used these powerful skills in your instruction and shared your knowledge with others (especially with students)?

WatchKnow - Videos for Kids to Learn From. Organized

Today I learned of a website possessing much potential for supplementing classroom instruction. It can engage students of all ages, in all curricular areas, in an audio-visual manner. The website: "WatchKnow - Videos for Kids to Learn From. Organized" The URL: http://www.watchknow.org

What is WatchKnow? From the website: "Imagine hundreds of thousands of great short videos, and other media, explaining every topic taught to school kids. Imagine them rated and sorted into a giant Directory, making them simple to find. WatchKnow--as in, "You watch, you know"--is a non-profit online community devoted to this goal."

After exploring this site, I have to agree that it is well organized and intuitive to navigate. With a library of over 12,000 audio-visual resources, there's a strong likelihood you'll find something that you can put to use!

Marion County educators: It wouldn't hurt to begin collecting a list of websites providing resources similar to those hosted at WatchKnow. You never know when access to the heavily used "UnitedStreaming" website we're all familiar with will become a thing of the past (hint, hint, HINT).

Remote Observation of Interns & Student Teachers

Not long ago a supervising faculty member from an institution of higher education contacted me. She indicated that she had over 8 students to observe in our district alone...17 miles from her location...not including those from other districts. Combined with the others she has to observe, that amounts to a LOT of driving.

She asked if there was a way to observe them online in real time so as to cut down on driving time and make the observation process more time and cost-effective. There is! Using Web 2.0 technology, it's entirely possible, low-cost, and easy to implement with a minimum of effort.

Needed:
1. An Internet connection on each end (observer and student at remote location). Wireless will do but wired is preferable.

2. Web cam: Built-in web cams come with most newer laptops. Those in the $25-$40 range should serve this purpose well. Read the user reviews. Buy a recognized name rand. I've used the MACALLY USB 2.0 Video Web Camera with Microphone (http://preview.tinyurl.com/webicecam) with great success. Cost as of this posting: $27.92

3. A headphone with and microscope boom. My personal preference: CYBER ACOUSTICS OEM STEREO HEADSET from http://tinyurl.com/cyberacoustics Cost as of this posting: $6.95.

4. Software: Skype or Oovoo. In our district, we're using Oovoo. Both applications are free.

5. Optional but highly recommended: A USB extension cable enabling the web cam to be manually held and used to track the student teacher as he or she moves throughout the classroom. This can be done by the school classroom's cooperating teacher.

Following the remote observation session, the remote observer and the student can hold a debriefing session using the same videoteleconferencing software. If a "premium" plan is purchased, capabilities exist to record and capture the entire session to be saved as a movie file for inclusion in the student's digital portfolio.

Oovoo has such capabilities.

MusicNotes -WOW!

It's been some time since my last post. Things have been QUITE busy with technology here in the district. However, this afternoon I have a few minutes to speak about the arts and a multi-modal software tool called "MusicNotes".

The program is free. The executable install file is about 11 Mb in size. It's available from http://www.musicnotes.com/download/suite/default.asp The program will open music, play it, and highlight the notes as they're being played. The tempo can be adjusted to suit one's reading speed.

Sheet music can be ordered in downloadable digital format, printed, and played within the program. The cost is comparable to purchasing it from a retailer. I've used it for weddings and church related music. It's extremely powerful and feature-packed. The library of music available is substantial, including several genres.

The program also has a "Guitar Guru" that will guide one through the basics of playing the music shown on the computer screen. Pretty "suite"! Give this suite a try. You won't be disappointed!

Communicating Effectively in the Digital Age

Land lines, pagers, fax machines, cell phones, email, text messaging, videoconferencing, Facebook, MySpace.

With so many avenues of communication available, we can, if we choose, avail ourselves to the world 24/7 and in a multitude of ways. Managing the methods we choose to communicate requires discernment. Knowing the mode to employ in a given situation and appropriately pairing the message with the intended audience and underlying context can be challenging.

With regard to modes of communication, age-related, "generational" norms and expectations have the potential to create missed opportunities if mutual understandings and familiarities aren't established.

By way of example: A phone call is placed and voice message (with brief details) is left, including the caller's cell number. Would it be reasonable to expect the recipient to respond using the same mode of communication? Would if be fairly reasonable if both parties communicated via cell phone and were capable of texting, to use a mixed-mode form of communication (call via cell phone, leave message, return message via text)?

Consider this scenario: Call via cell phone, leave message and return cell number, respond via Facebook? Pros to that approach? Cons to that approach? Unless one is aware of the surrounding circumstances the answer may remain elusive; equally so the timing of the communication...and any potential opportunities.

Technology is wonderful!

Effective communication in this day and age requires knowing not only how to communicate, but which modes are compatible for the sake of timing, clarity, compatibility, and expediency.

So Many Choices: Which Tool To Use?

Slide: An Alternative to Animoto

Bill Gates made it such that there are at least three ways to accomplish a task in Windows. Alternatives are a good thing because we will eventually find one that we'll naturally gravitate toward. So it should be with applications.

Not long ago I mad a post about a very cool online application called Animoto. It allows for the uploading of your pics, the addition of music, and ultimately, the automation of a "digital story" of sorts. Animoto mixes the music and creates anomations, effects, and transitions for you. Don't like the results? Click on "remix" and see the results. Post the output to Facebook or other social networking sites.

Here's an alternate service: http://www.slide.com. It does much the same as Animoto, with a few added features. One of the most notable differences? A MUCH larger music library from which to select is what immediately stands out. It's just as easy to use as Animoto. Give Slide a whirl! You'll like what you see!

Lingoes - Free Portable Translation & More

MyApps and PortableApps have been the topics of previous posts to this blog. To review, "apps" are short for "applications".

In the context of this and the two former blog posts, I'm addressing a suite (collection) of applications residing on and running from within a flash drive. They can be taken from computer to computer and require no installation other than onto the flash drive upon which they are stored.

The latest I've tried and found to be exceptionally powerful and versatile is Lingoes. This portable app features dictionaries, translators, speech, the ability to download and install multitudes of free dictionaries.

One of the most powerful dictionaries with which I've experimented is the bidirectional Chinese>English dictionary. If you interact with ELLs (English Language Learners) in any capacity, check out this free program. Click on the links above or below to learn more. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to navigate this program.

Looking through the list of available applications, you'll be pleased to find some assistive software for those who may be visually or hearing challenged. I customized my suite to include these programs as well as concept mapping, word processing, antivirus, browsing, and touch typing software.

eSchool News - OUTSTANDING!

Not often does a publication cross my path that grabs my attention quite like this one: eSchool News. There's an online version, a paper version sent via mail, and an e-newsletter. Information covers the entire K-20 spectrum. There's news for parents, teachers, administrators, and higher education.

What really caught my attention was eSchool News TV! There were several engaging videos to view, all professionally rendered. The segment reviewing the NECC 2009 conference in Washington D.C. was especially enjoyable. If you've not yet experienced a technology conference of this scale and calibre, watch the video. You'll get a sense of the scale of this event. This year's conference attracted a crowd of 18,500+ attendees from all over the globe!

While visiting eSchool News, I also visited the Resources section. It was there that I found a link to royalty-free stock footage, sound effects, and motion background collections for $8.41 per DVD! Basically the disc collections are free. The charge is for shipping and handling per disc.

I could go on and on about what I found at eSchool News. Why not visit it for yourself and see the wealth of useful, practical, relevant information that awaits you? Set the egg timer, though, because you might forget to eat supper!

At this summer's NECC conference, I was reminded of devices that convert the old vinyl LP records (remember those?) and cassette tapes into digital MP3 files - great for using with PowerPoint or incorporating into digital storytelling projects.

I found a company called FirstStreet that sells both devices, and at reasonable prices, too!

Check out their USB turntable and USB cassette player, then download Audacity, CoolEdit96, PhotoStory, MovieMaker, or use Animoto and have a BLAST making your digital creations!

A gem of a tip from the SREB conference in Atlanta I want to share with you:

Animoto

This web-based application makes digital storytelling as about easy as easy as can be! A basic account is free. All you'll need is a computer, Internet access, an email account, and a digital camera.

Apply for an account at http://www.anomoto.com. Upload your pictures from your digital camera, sort them, then choose from the royalty-free music listed in their library OR upload your own music. This application even integrates with FaceBook if you have an account. It draws upon the pictures listed among those found in your FaceBook albums.

Once the photos are uploaded and sorted in the manner/sequence you desire, let the application do the rest. If you don't like the manner in which it "mixes" your photos and applies the effects and transitions, you simply press the "remix" button to generate a different set of transitions. No two renderings are the same.

Children will have this program figured out within on class period, if not less. You'll be extremely pleased with the results.

If you really want to "take it up a notch", use the FireFox web browser with the "NetVideoHunter" Add-In to download your flash video file for downloading and playback on your local computer.

Download Online Videos the Easy Way

I used to have a separate application to download those flash-based videos embedded within web pages such as news websites, YouTube, and the like. No longer!

Ever since making the move from Internet Explorer to FireFox, I've made use of the Add-on called NetVideoHunter. This little gem makes downloading embedded videos a snap! The free FLV or GOM player renders them beautifully.

Give these applications a try. You won't be sorry. The "learning curve"? There's no curve at all!

I've just discovered this collaborative source via Twitter called EtherPad. It allows multiple participants to collaborate simultaneously on a document in real time.

Naturally it's free (at least for now), and no account is required! Couple it with the power of Skype or Oovoo, and you've got a really powerful set of collaborative tools at your disposal!

"Lost" The Real Life Episode

There's "Lost" the TV series, then there's "Lost" as in losing data files. There are a plethora of utilities that exist, all claiming to recover lost files.

This review focuses upon a utility that's free, and which locates and restores accidentally deleted files.

The name of the utility is Recuva. It's available from http://tinyurl.com/quswbp. It's easy to learn. It works. I tried it and can attest to it's ability to perform as described.

From the website, the following summary:

"Chances are that if you've accidentally erased a file, or something malicious like a worm of virus has done it for you, Recuva will find it. And if it hasn't been overwritten, this program will recover it for you.

We did say delete. Despite the name, and the company's description of it as a "file recovery" utility, Recuva's not a recovery program in the accepted sense because it works only with an intact file system. If you've reformatted your drive, or there are physical errors, you'll need something else.

But if you just want a good un-delete program with a small disk footprint (and no financial cost), then Recuva is what you're looking for. Usually a “quick setup guide” ships with computers, but I've yet to see full-blown "manual" as in the case of printers, cell phones, MP3 players, etc. Manuals for most consumer electronics (such as printers) exist, and may be downloaded from the manufacturer’s website.

Time to Clean Your Filters!

With the changing of the seasons, it's always a good idea to clean your filters, whether they're furnace or air conditioners, and yes - digital projector filters!

Eventually your digital projector will prompt you that it's time to clean the filter. If you're left wondering what to do, check out the owner's manual. Can't find it? You might locate it online at the manufacturer's website.

Don't seek to just reset the warning - doing so will shorten the life of the components! Clean the filter (it's easy to do), THEN reset the warning (equally easy to do).

PDF forms are great. They are cross-platform documents that take up little space. Cross-platform? That means they run on both PCs and Macs. A Word document converted to a PDF document is smaller in size than a PDF file, and keeps others from making changes to the original. The PDF format does quite well at preserving the original layout of the document in which it was created. Get your Word documents converted to PDF format at http://www.zamzar.com.

In the schools, LoJack was installed on laptops to track them in case they are stolen. This year recoveries have been made. In an earlier post to this blog (see the March 14th entry entitled "Lock & Trace Your Other Laptop(s)", I mentioned a product that you could download to your laptop (or desktop), and that does the same. It goes by the name of LaptopLock.

On another, similar note:

Some of you may be familiar and in fact may have received training on WebTop. Whether or not you have, there's a similar product that takes WebTop to a new level. Consider it a portable operating system that follows you from computer to computer, no matter from which computer you login, and from any location!

This "virtual operating system" offers a generous 3 GB of storage space, email, a web browser, a writing application, calendar, file sharing, calculator, desktop with customizable desktop, chat client, and much, MUCH more!!! It offers most everything that WebTop does, and more.

Of course, iCloud is free. Check out the iCloud virtual operating system at http://www.icloud.com. It works very, very well on Internet Explorer, and fairly well (with some minor glitches) in FireFox, although it appears that strides are being made in this area.

Collaboration Tools Revisited

As your team or PLC seeks alternative ways to communicate (aside from SLOW, clunky, outdated, one-way email), consider at the possibilities afforded to you by the free service called Scribblar. It offers a whiteboard that can be marked up, a private room that accommodates audio and multiple users, uploadable documents, and more.

To complement your collaborative efforts and make them as portable as your collaborative environment, consider the wealth of free, cross-platform (they work on Macintosh or PCs) applications that run from a flash drive OR an SD card (often used in digital cameras) if your laptop has a card reader slot. These applications, like the OpenOffice Suite, are Microsoft Office compatible. In other words, OpenOffice Writer will save files in .doc format to your flash drive or SD card, then, when inserted in another computer with Microsoft Office installed, the files will open.

The really attractive feature about portable apps (applications) is that they take up NO (0%) room on the computer's hard drive! The web browser leaves NO trace of Internet activity (like cookies, passwords, or History) on the computer to which the flash drive or SD card was inserted and the program run. Likewise with the portable email program. Get the idea?

Free, portable, small, private, and compatible. What's not to love? Get a flash drive or SD card then be prepared to feel the freedom! The larger the capacity, the better. While a 4 GB unit will suffice comfortably , I use an 8 GB drive. They're inexpensive; the latter costing $20.00 or so at Radio Shack.

Really Nasty Malware - AntiVirus 360

Recently several people have contacted me, reporting that their PCs have been infected with a "virus" that keeps bugging them to purchase a program called "AntiVirus 360". it reports that their computer is loaded with all kinds of viruses, malware, and trojans.

Antivirus 360 is a rogue anti-spyware program intended to fool users into purchasing a fake product. Persistent pop ups and system tray warnings pound users with fake system alerts. Often -- without knowing -- users are tricked in to thinking these fake alerts are official "Windows Alerts". AntiVirus 360 is a nasty program running silently in the background which kills PC performance.

So...the facts is that AntiVirus 360 IS malware. Really REALLY bad malware. Some have taken their computers to repair shops and had the hard drives totally reformatted to get rid of it. That doesn't have to be done, though. There's a "triple-whammy" that I've used to get rid of the pest.

First, I disable "System Restore", the screen saver, and disable Hibernation mode.

I start by keeping my LEGITIMATE antivirus program, Norton Antivirus, up-to-date. I don't use the Norton Security Suite. It's a resource hog. I just use the plain-Jane Norton AntiVirus. It's updated at least every week, then I run a full system scan.

I also use Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. It's free. I also update it and run a scan to remove threats. Ad-Aware is also used. It, too, is free. It requires updating, scanning, and the removal of any threats found.

Using all three of these programs in concert has successfully removed AntiVirus 360 from three PCs without having to reformat the hard drives. Keep the programs up-to-date. Scan your PC regularly. Make backups of your files.

Hint: Be wary of buying a program claiming to be a tool that removes AntiVirus 360. It just might be more of the same.

Lock & Trace Your Other Laptop(s)

Our district has installed software that traces stolen laptops, and has successfully proven itself.

You, too, can install similar software on your own laptops for FREE. You can also control it remotely once you realize that it's been stolen, as long as it's been connecting to the Internet. Best of all, you can delete or encrypt files and even track the location right down to the state, city, and street location!

Did I mention that the cost is zero, zip, zilch? I've tried it. It works!!! Go to http://www.thelaptoplock.com and learn more. You can register as many laptops as you want. For free. All you need is an email account.

Now: Couple that service with another FREE program that serves as a motion sensor and, if your laptop has a built-in web camera, will take a picture of the suspected thief, upload it to an FTP server of your choice, and record the IP address from which it connected to the Internet. Couple this information with that provided by LaptopLock, and you've got a powerful security suite that increases the chances of recovering your laptop and securing or even deleting sensitive data. The name of this additional program? Yaw-cam. Get it from http://www.yawcam.com.

WRITEIT! LIVE, an online student writing platform, appears to offer a untold potential! Accounts start as low as $4.00 per student as of this posting. The publisher offers a myriad of educational products, but this one in particular catches my eye.

As an aside: While performing recent installs of DIBELS software, I can say with confidence that the vast majority of computers need antivirus definitions updated. There's YouTube (sorry - if you're trying to access this extremely beneficial site from school, it'll be blocked), TeacherTube, GodTube (now called Tangle), Facebook (yet another blocked website), Blogger, MySpace (you guessed it - blocked), Ning, TBD, and a host of other Web 2.0 sites that provide dynamic content.

Take social networking to another level! Consider TED as your next stop to gather information and exchange ideas with others, upload and download videos, and acquire new, global perspectives!

A visionary think-tank I am fortunate to be a member of, Master Minds, held a teleconference today. One of the "speakers" we listened to was Benjamin Zander, a classical music afficionado. We discussed how the related arts MUST be made part of the STEM approach to assessment, and how they were, for the most part, being overlooked. We also discussed left and right-brain studies as they relate to assessment and the arts.

What I'd like to introduce to you, however, is the immense potential for gaining new insights and networking potential with educators from all over the world! Check out TED. You won't be sorry!

Music & Technology in the Classroom

There are a wealth of resources available to the classroom teacher, whether choral or instrumental, that can be used to augment the music program and bring technology into the curriculum. These resources can also be used to enhance instructional delivery.

One such product is a piece of hardware called the MusicPad Pro Plus, from http://www.freehandsystems.com/products.html This product is an electronic-touch-screen based notebook. Scan your music, save it to a flash drive, then insert the drive into the MusicPad. It can then be opened up and read sheet music electronically. Pages can be turned by touching the screen or optional foot pedal. The unit comes with a stylus that permits one to make markups to the music, then saves the markups for rehearsal. The unit will also connect to a digital projector so your students can view the music on a large screen. You'll then be able to see their faces as they read the music behind you. No more "hidden faces" looking down at the music! I have such a device. It's easy to learn how to navigate this piece of equipment. It mounts on a music stand and is portable. It has a battery that is good for 2 or so hours between charges.

Another item is a free piece of software called Anvil Studio. This program creates midi files that can be played on a computer or through a clavinova. You can then accompany the clavinova with another instrument such as a trumpet or guitar. Chad Davis, a local musician, has used this program with great success. Another program that is similar to but much more versatile than Anvil Studio is one called FL Studio. The demo version is fully functional, but will not save your projects, HOWEVER, it will allow you to export them as .wav or .mp3 files. The program allow for multi-track composition and looping. I've not worked with it but have seen it in action. Local musician Dusty Merrill has used it with success in our church as part of the worship and praise team. It is VERY impressive. The fully functional version is $99.00. The demo version, though, should do what you want it to do if .wav or mp3 files will meet your needs. Download FL Studio from http://flstudio.image-line.com

Students Gathering Data - It CAN Be Fun!

As educators, when we hear the word "data", we know the importance that it plays in decision-making. West Virginia CSOs require students to be able to read and interpret data in the form of charts, diagrams, tables, and a variety of other formats.

Many times, the data presented to them in curricular materials is irrelevant to them; to their interests. Why not provide for them a set of tools whereby they can construct their own questions, gather their own data, then render it in a variety of graphical forms for the purposes of interpretation and presentation?

Fortunately, there exist a few simple, free, and easy-to-learn online resources to help them do just that!

There's even a "classic" interface available at http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/graphing/classic for those wanting a more simplified interactive experience.

Simply put: Let the children develop their own topics, design their own hypotheses or predictions, design their own questions that address those predictions, then conduct the poll(s).

The results can be used to explain and or justify their predictions and refine or rationalize the "why" of the outcomes. Now there's learning that's relevant, involves students in higher-order thinking, real-world, and engaging!

Add A Little Speed to Your PC

Here are a few easy tips (in addition to the periodic maintenance in a separate entry made earlier) that you can perform periodically to keep your computer humming along:

Open "My Computer".
Right-click on the C: drive.
Left click on "Properties".
Uncheck the box at the bottom of the screen to dis-allow the Indexing service.
Click on the "Tools" tab.
Click on the "Error Checking" button.
There are two boxes for error checking. Click to place a check in both.
Click "Start", then "Yes" to the prompt".
Restart your computer.
Your computer will run the two routines you checked in step #7 above.

Windows has a built-in disk degragmenter, but it's marginally effective. Below are links to two free utilities I've used that will defragment your disk much faster and oprimize your hard drive more effectively than Windows "Disk Defragmenter. I'm more partial to the first one listed, although both are good products in their own right, and free, to boot!

Feeling Disconnected?

Ever lost your Internet connection? Don't reboot! Try these two simple commands for Windows XP:

Click Start, then Run. In the text box, type ipconfig /release (NOTE the space after the "g" in "ipconfig"). Click "OK". A black screen will quickly appear then disappear. This is normal.
Click Start, then Run. Type ipconfig /renew. (NOTE the space after the "g" in "ipconfig"). A black screen will appear and last a little longer as your Internet connection is reestablished.

This trick works better more often on wired computers, but does work with wirelessly connected workstations. In any case, it's faster than rebooting!

Periodic Maintenance

At least once a month, it's a good idea to keep the files on your computer in order. Here are 2 things you can do to help keep your computer running faster and more smoothly:

Run the "Check Disk" utility (for Windows XP). How? Click on Start, then Run. In the box, type the following: chkdsk /f. Note the space after the "k". After you've typed that, click on "OK". At the black screen prompt, type Y and press the Enter key on your keyboard, then restart your computer.
Run the Disk Defragmenter utility. How? Click on Start, mouse up to Programs, mouse over to Accessories, then to System Tools, then down to Disk Defragmenter. Click the "Defragment" button.
Note: Disable your screen saver before running disk defragmenter.

Performing these two routines once a month will pay big dividends in helping to keep your computer running more optimally!

Stay Ahead of Adware, Spyware, & Malware!

It's great to see you here! Periodically I'll post tech tips and thoughts for the educational community. Many of the thoughts will take the form of practical ideas and suggestions that I've personally tried, so as to remove any concerns with whether or not they're "safe".

While I won't be providing technical support for the products, I will answer questions to the extent that my experience with them will allow. Thank you for your dedication to learning and passion for helping the children through advancing technology, not for technology's sake alone, but for helping children to realize its potential as a tool to help themselves!
